Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong has paid tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger by covering ‘That Thing You Do!’, the track is taken from the film of the same name of which the Fountains Of Wayne leader provided the soundtrack for.
Billie Joe Armstrong has been keeping himself busy whilst he has been in self-isolation with ‘That Thing You Do!’ being the latest of a long list of covers including Tiffany’s ’80s bop, ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ and ‘Corpus Christi by San Francisco’s Avengers.
Armstrong isn’t the only acclaimed artist who has paid homage to Schlesinger with Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard also covering one of his tracks as well as the band from That Thing You Do!, ‘The Wonders’.
To remember Schlesinger, Tom Everett Scott (drummer Guy Patterson) Johnathon Schaech (singer Jimmy), Steve Zahn (guitarist Lenny) and Ethan Embry (bass player T.B. Player) reunited via Zoom 24 years on from when we last saw them for a COVID-19 benefit in aid of MusiCares.
Armstrong recently came out to speak about his recent collaboration with Morrissey, saying he was unaware of the former Smiths man’s outspoken political beliefs, “I wasn’t aware until the song came out,” Armstrong told The Guardian.
“We do the song, and he was very lovely, and then the song comes out and a lot of Brits were like: what the hell are you doing? I really did not have a clue …” He added: “Hey, we’ve all got our Ted Nugents, right?”
