Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong covers Kim Wilde's 'Kids In America'

The latest instalment from Billie Joe Armstrong’s ‘No Fun Mondays’ covers series sees the Green Day frontman take on the 1980s classic ‘Kids In America’ as a tribute to bassist Mike Dirnt.

“This week’s No Fun Mondays is dedicated to the one, the only, Mike Dirnt,” Armstrong wrote on Green Day’s YouTube page as he dedicated the Kim Wilde cover song to his bandmate.

Originally written by the Muffs, the song was a smash hit for Wilde in 1981 and clearly resonated with Armstrong. He called the lead singer of the Muffs “one of my favourite songwriters”. Shattuck sadly died last year following a battle with ALS and Armstrong revealed Green Day had listened to the band’s first album a lot when writing their own seminal record, Dookie.

The 1980s are proving fruitful for the Green Day singer as he has not only taken on Wilde’s track but also the Tiffany classic ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ and tribute to Adam Schlesinger ‘That Thing You Do’.

The latest is another classic Armstrong rendition, heavy on the delivery and power up the punk. The gReen Day singer looks ready to get back out and touring as he performs the 1981 hit.
