Former Great White singer Jack Russell dead at 63

Jack Russell, the famed American rock vocalist and founding member of Great White, has passed away at the age of 63. The musician, who first rose to prominence with his distinctive blend of glam rock and metal during the 1980s, had been battling with illness for many months but is said to have died peacefully surrounded by friends, family, and loved ones.

The frontman’s death was confirmed in a social media post made by his family members on August 15th. Within the post, his family shared, “Jack is loved and remembered for his sense of humour, exceptional zest for life, and unshakeable contribution to rock and roll where his legacy will forever thrive,” adding that details of a public memorial for the American rock star will be announced at a later time.

In July, the singer publicly stepped back from performing, owing to the worsening state of his Lewy body dementia, as well as his recent diagnosis of multiple system atrophy. Around that time, Russell shared the statement, “Words cannot express my gratitude for the many years of memories, love, and support.”

The post concluded, “Thank you for letting me live my dreams. You have made my life a wonder.”

Those dreams began in Montebello, California, when a young Russell grew up idolising rock stars such as Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant or Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. Using this as a basis, Russell started performing with a variety of high school bands during his youth before finally settling on Great White, which he formed in 1977 alongside Mark Kendall.

Great White achieved their commercial peak during the mid-’80s, a time during which hard rock and hair metal were becoming increasingly popular and entered the consciousness of the mainstream. Russell’s glam metal performance set him apart from other artists of the same era, and the highlight of the band’s time together came with the 1987 album, Once Bitten and its follow-up …Twice Shy.

Between 1984 and 1999, Great White released nine studio albums, in addition to their extensive tour schedule.

During the early 2000s, the group briefly disbanded so that Russell could focus on recording solo material, which never really achieved the same heights as his work with Great White. In 2003, a reunited performance of Great White ended in tragedy after a pyrotechnic mishap caused 100 people to die in a fire at The Station nightclub in Rhode Island.

Despite the tragedy, Russell continued to perform with Great White until 2009, when he splintered off to form Jack Russell’s Great White, who continued to perform until very recently – including many controversial shows during the peak of the covid pandemic. The frontman leaves behind a discography beloved by thousands of American music fanatics and an impressive career dedicated to rock and roll.
