A Grease TV spinoff series is on the way

A spinoff television series based around the iconic 1978 film Grease is in the works for streaming service HBO.

The new show, given the title Rydell High, will flow the original film and be set in the 1950s. The series will include some returning characters and will also feature some of the film’s classic songs but with slightly different arrangements.

The original film, which famously starred the likes of John Travolta as Danny, Olivia Newton-John as Sandy, was based on the 1971 musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey so the latest adaptation sticks ot the trend.

Bob Greenblatt, WarnerMedia Entertainment chairman, said of the new project: “We’re going to build out the world of this show which everybody loves, in that musical style, and build basically a ‘High School Musical’ kind of experience that will be a big fun rock and roll musical.”

The new series will be produced by Paramount Television who worked on Fox’s Grease: Live in 2016 which went on to be a critical success.
