Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh dead at 84

Bassist Phil Lesh, one of the foundations of the Grateful Dead for over half a century, has passed at the age of 84.

Lesh had been with the famous jam band throughout their tenure in the 1960s and eventually went on to play with various other projects, such as The Other Ones and his own outfit, Phil Lesh and Friends.

The news of his passing was confirmed by his family on his Instagram, stating, “Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of the Grateful Dead, passed peacefully this morning. He was surrounded by his family and full of love.”

While details have been scarce surrounding his passing, his family is asking for privacy at this time, stating, “Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love.” Lesh had founded the Grateful Dead alongside guitar icon Jerry Garcia, working on their eponymous debut and staying with them up until their final live album, Without a Net.

In the era of the summer of love, the group became known for their omnipresence in the hippie culture of California, with live shows that extended jam sessions that stretched out well beyond the album length of any of their songs. While many innovative bass players from the time sought to bring a melodic side to the instrument, Lesh was known for improvising every time he was onstage in the same way that Garcia had done.

Lesh was also known for the various hits he worked on with the group. Though his contributions were often limited compared to those of his bandmates, his original songs, such as ‘Truckin’ and ‘Box of Rain‘, have become the most iconic tunes the group ever made.

The bassist also shared lead vocals throughout his time in the group. While he had initially been known for filling out the group’s signature high harmonies, he eventually stepped down after damaging his vocal cords in 1974, leaving high vocals to Donna Godchaux and singing the rest of his originals as a baritone.

After the band disbanded, Lesh had gone through various health issues as well, including a battle with prostate cancer in 2006. While he continued playing with Grateful Dead alumnus Bob Weir in the band Further in all the way up to the 2010s, he would be off the road for back surgery in 2019.

Aside from his ill health, Lesh still continued to play as late as March 2024, returning to celebrate his 84th birthday at The Capitol Theatre in New York, having already performed there for his 83rd and celebrating his 100th show at the venue.
