Golden Globes 2026: Teyana Taylor offers solidarity to Black women after first win
Singer and actor Teyana Taylor won her first Golden Globe award at the 2026 event ceremony, accepting the golden statue for ‘Best Female Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture’ for her performance as Perfidia Beverly Hills in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another.
Winning the first award of the night and presented by Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Garner, Taylor reacted in tears at the announcement of her name, struggling to contain her emotions as she hurriedly took to the stage.
After a brief interaction with fellow nominee Julia Roberts, Taylor stepped behind the microphone and turned around to reveal a diamond-encrusted thong attached to her black gown via a hole above the small of her back.
“I almost didn’t even write a speech because I didn’t think I would get this,” Taylor quipped while still in shock.
In her acceptance speech, Taylor gestured to her two daughters watching from upstairs in The Beverly Hilton event venue, “Y’all better be off them damn phones and watching me right now.”
She then honoured One Battle After Another director Paul Thomas Anderson, saying, “Thank you for your vision, your trust and your brilliance. My gratitude is endless.”
As she ended her speech, Taylor sent a message to Black women, stating, “To my Brown sisters and little Brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability.”
She added, “Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter, and our dreams deserve space.”
Taylor’s first Golden Globe win saw the ‘Gonna Love Me’ singer beat Amy Madigan (Weapons), Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value), Emily Blunt (The Smashing Machine), and Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good) for the prestigious ‘Best Female Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture’ award.
