Golden Globes 2026: Jessie Buckley wins ‘Best Female Actor – Drama’

At the 83rd annual Golden Globes, Jessie Buckley has taken home the award for ‘Best Female Actor – Drama’ for her emotional portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet.

The adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s beloved novel was nominated for six Golden Globes on the night.

The movie tells the story of William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, grieving the loss of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet.

The film investigates the couple’s relationship as they navigate the unbearable grief, providing a fresh take on the timeless themes that inspired William Shakespeare to write the classic play, Hamlet.

The other contenders in the ‘Best Female Actor – Drama’ category included: Tess Thompson, for Hedda; Eva Victor, for Sorry, Baby; Julia Roberts, for After the Hunt; Jennifer Lawrence, for Die My Love; and Renate Reinsve, for Sentimental Value.

Buckley also recently took home the ‘Best Actress’ award at the 2026 Critics’ Choice Awards for her work on Hamnet. During her speech at the Critics’ Choice Awards, she shouted out her co-star, Mescal: “Paul, I bloody love you, man. And I know loads of other women do in this room too, but tough shit.”

While accepting the Golden Globe, Buckley appeared to be moved by the occasion. She shared with the industry titans in the room: “This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in, but thank you, Golden Globes, thank you Focus and everybody who supported this film.”

Talking about the film’s key grip, Tomasz Sternicki, Buckley added: “I found [Tomasz] one day at the back of his truck, and he was chopping up potatoes and onions and meat. He was making – and he brought his ginormous cast iron pot over from Poland – and he was making soup. And this soup started turning up on set, so it was delicious.”

The ceremony was held, for the second year in a row, by comedian Nikki Glaser. As well as hosting the show last year, Glaser was nominated for the ‘Stand Up Comedy on Television’ award.
