Glastonbury set to return in 2025 but not in 2026
After the massive turnout at Glastonbury 2024, co-founder Emily Eavis has stated that the festival will return next year and take a break in 2026.
This is following this year’s Glastonbury, which saw country music legend Shania Twain take the legend’s slot earlier today (June 30th). Alongside the previous day’s headliners like Coldplay and Dua Lipa, R&B singer SZA is set to bring the weekend to a close on the Pyramid Stage this evening.
When discussing the decision to take a break from the festival, Eavis said that it was a matter of preserving the festival grounds, stating, “(It will) give the land a rest. The festival before a fallow year is always a fun one to plan, because you almost have to fit two years into one. We’re already in talks with some acts for it. It’s exciting!”
Eavis also included a special thanks to all involved with putting this year’s festival together, saying, “I really would like to say thank you to everyone who’s made this year so special. It’s got to be the best one yet,” she said. “Every single one of our vast, incredible crew is crucial to making this event work. And, of course, it simply wouldn’t exist without the participation of the kind, brilliant, respectful festivalgoers.”
This comes after an eventful Glastonbury performance from the likes of Coldplay, who announced the release of their upcoming album Moon Music on October 4th, 2024. During their set, the pop-rock group also brought out actor Michael J Fox onstage for a song, famous for playing Chuck Berry’s ‘Johnny B Goode’ when playing Marty McFly in Back to the Future.
This also comes off the heels of a summer festival circuit marred by many cancellations. Outside of Glastonbury, this year’s Download Festival, as well as SXSW, were subject to numerous artists not participating in the festivities due to certain sponsorships used to fund weapons manufacturing for the war between Israel and Palestine.
In response, many performers at Glastonbury aired their grievances surrounding the war from the stage. R&B superstar Janelle Monae had urged her fans to stand in support of any marginalised people, while indie rockers The Last Dinner Party urged their fans to vote and encouraged those to rally against weapons manufacturing corporations such as Barclays.
While a Glastonbury Festial in 2025 has been confirmed, no word has been given on potential performers.
