Glastonbury 2024: Watch Dua Lipa pay tribute to Elton John with ‘Cold Heart’
During her headline set at Glastonbury Festival, Dua Lipa paid tribute to last year’s bill-topper Elton John by performing their lockdown hit, ‘Cold Heart’.
The track, released in 2021 which originally appeared on John’s 32nd studio album The Lockdown Sessions, remixes three classic songs by John to create one massive floor-filling anthem. The originals which were interpolated by producer PNAU to create ‘Cold Heart’ are ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Kiss the Bride’, ‘Sacrifice’, and Where’s the Shoorah?’
While they may come from different generations, pop runs through both Elton and Dua’s DNA, with her picking up the torch from where he left it on the Pyramid Stage in 2023 during his headline set at Glastonbury.
‘Cold Heart’ delivered a number one single for the pairing in 12 different countries, including the United Kingdom. Notably, the track was also performed by John when he bid farewell to performing in epic style at Worthy Farm last June.
Explaining how the collaboration was born, Dua told Stephen Colbert in 2022: “I was hanging out by the pool before going to do some writing, and all of a sudden my phone rings, and it’s a FaceTime from Elton and his husband, David — casual.”
The Glastonbury headliner continued: “I feel like I manifested this, in a way,” she explains of the collaboration. “‘Rocket Man’ is my driving song, it’s my shower song, it’s my song I sing along to myself…When I got asked to sing that part, I was like, ‘OK, it was just meant to be.’”
Although Dua was unable to join Elton for his set at Glastonbury last year to play the collaboration, both artists have now used the Pyramid Stage as a vessel to perform the hit during their respective headline sets.
Prior to taking to the stage, Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis shared her excitement to see Dua Lipa perform, singling her out as her highlight of the festival. “I’m looking forward to Dua Lipa tonight, you know, I feel like she’s really born to do this,” Eavis told BBC Radio 2.
Eavis continued: “She’s a proper festivalgoer, she comes every year and… you can really tell whether someone really gets the festival and loves it.”
Glastonbury Festival runs from June 26th until June 30th and Far Out is on the ground at Worthy Farm to provide coverage directly from Pilton. This year’s event will be headlined by Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA.
