Glastonbury 2024: The pictures from Dua Lipa’s headline set
Dua Lipa got things off to a flyer at Glastonbury Festival as she headlined the Pyramid Stage for the very first time in her career. With SZA headlining on June 30th, it is the first time in festival’s history that two women have topped the bill on the same weekend.
Earlier this year, Dua Lipa released her third album, Radical Optimism, and further solidified her position as one of Britain’s most successful modern exports. Dua also has a storied history with Glastonbury, having previously performed on the John Peel Stage in 2016 and 2017. However, headlining the Pyramid Stage is a completely different proposition, but it’s a challenge Eavis firmly backs her to rise to.
“I’m looking forward to Dua Lipa tonight, you know, I feel like she’s really born to do this,” Eavis told BBC Radio 2. Eavis continued: “She’s a proper festivalgoer, she comes every year and… you can really tell whether someone really gets the festival and loves it.”
Eavis also defended the festival’s pop-heavy line-up, claiming 2024 isn’t the time to have a line-up that leans towards rock, stating, “I think the line-up reflects what’s happening in the music world at the moment – there aren’t a lot of new rock acts to choose from, if I’m honest.”
This proved to be sound judgement on the night as the English-Albanian pop sensation drew a mammoth crowd despite competition from Idles, Fontaines D.C., Fatboy Slim and Jungle who were all clashing with her set. Nevertheless, with high-end production and pyrotechnics, she kept the masses enamoured.
She even welcomed a special guest. In typical headliner tradition, the ‘Houdini’ singer welcomed a special friend in the form of Kevin Parker of Tame Impala fame to a rousing reception.
Parker co-wrote and co-produced Dua’s third album, Radical Optimism, earlier this year. But it was Tame Impala’s ‘The Less I Know The Better’ that they collaborated on in the evening with Dua Lipa joking that it was the greatest night of her life because she got to pretend she was in the band. Not that she had to, because it was first-rate pop ruling the waves this time out.
