Glastonbury 2024: Soft Play joined by Bob Vylan for special performance

During their performance on The Other Stage at Glastonbury Festival on June 20th, Soft Play were joined by fellow punk duo Bob Vylan for an electric performance of ‘One More Day Won’t Hurt’.

The track originally featured on Soft Play’s 2019 EP, The Velvet Ditch, shortly before they embarked upon a hiatus. For some time, it seems like the band formerly known as Slaves had disappeared for good, but they are now back with a new name and their performance at Glastonbury was a strong reminder of their capacity as a live act.

In 2022, during an exclusive interview with Far Out, frontman Isaac Holman, who was on the brink of releasing his debut solo album as Baby Dave, revealed that the band had no future plans to make music, which has now thankfully changed.

Holman said of the band’s status at that time: “We’re parked for now. I can’t really say, but yeah, we’re not doing anything right now. We’ve both got over shit we want to do.”

While Holman embarked upon a solo career as Baby Dave, his bandmate Laurie Vincent made music as Larry Pink The Human, allowing them both to explore new aspects of their artistry which don’t align with Soft Play.

However, when they do reconvene, an alchemy occurs and their chemistry filled the Other Stage, as they delivered a career-spanning set, including new material from their forthcoming album, Heavy Jelly, set for release on July 19th.

Since their last album, 2018’s Acts of Fear and Love, both members of the band have been through incredibly challenging personal circumstances. Vincent tragically lost his partner in 2020, and Holman suffered mental health problems, which made him want to quit music for good.

Holman told Far Out in a previous interview: “For quite a while, I couldn’t really do anything. I was just literally being looked after by my parents, and then it took like two years for me to get out of my parents’ house and into a flat. I’m way, way, way better than I was, but I’m still on my road to recovery.”

Two years on, Holman has now electrified the tens of thousands in attendance on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, which would have seemed inconceivable only a short time ago. This set marked a full circle moment for the band who have been to hell and back, but have repaired their friendship, and firmly returned to where they belong.

Glastonbury Festival runs from June 26th until June 30th, and Far Out is on the ground at Worthy Farm to provide coverage directly. This year’s event is headlined by Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA.
