Gillian Anderson reveals whether she’ll appear in ‘X-Files’ reboot

Gillian Anderson, the star of X-Files, has provided her thoughts on Ryan Coogler’s upcoming reboot and divulged whether she’ll be appearing in the highly-anticipated new series.

Last year, it was revealed the Black Panther director was set to take the reins and reignite the adored 1990s television programme. However, no further details have been disclosed about his plans for the project, including whether Anderson will reprise her role as Dana Scully or if her co-star David Duchovny will come back as Fox Mulder.

As the defining role of her career, Anderson has been asked about X-Files more times than she could possibly count, and understandably, she has always played down the possibility. With the news that Coogler is now onboard and developing a new series, the actor has now slightly altered her stance.

“It’s so funny because for most of my life, since I have finished The X-Files, every interview I do, people have asked and the answer has always been, ‘Nope, not going to happen, not going to happen,’” Anderson said during an appearance on the Today show on April 3rd.

She continued: “Now, Ryan Coogler, who is the director of Black Panther — brilliant, brilliant director — has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it, and I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen.”

Furthermore, Anderson conceded “there’s a chance” a reboot will materialise in the near future, and supported Coogler to take the beloved series in a fresh direction, declaring him as “a bit of a genius”

Anderson also left the door open for Scully to return, adding: “Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing. I’m not saying no. I think he’s really cool and I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well. And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.”

Her comments arrive after X-Files creator Chris Carter expressed his worries about the programme returning to the screens in the modern age amid the current political climate.

In addition to dealing with the issues that Carter faced while at the helm, the X-Files creator believes there’s added pressure on Coogler because of the dangerous rise of conspiracy theories, noting: “Everything’s a conspiracy. No one knows what the truth is. It’s completely subjective and relative now.”

However, Carter also provided his support to Coogler, revealing he’s “looking forward to seeing what somebody else does with” the show. He also stated the duo enjoyed a “really nice conversation” about what Coogler hopes to do with X-Files.
