Ghost cancel Mexico City concert minutes before showtime

Minutes before they were due to take the stage, rock band Ghost cancelled their show in Mexico City.

On September 23rd, the chart-topping Swedish band shared a message with those in attendance at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City. The cancellation came due to the unexpected illness of Tobias Forge, the frontman who also goes by the musical alias Papa V Perpetua.

A message was broadcast to fans in attendance only minutes before the show was set to start. The statement began: “It is with deep regret that we must inform you the Ghost show tonight, September 23, has been cancelled. Tobias Forge is suffering from food poisoning, which makes it impossible for the band to perform. The concerts scheduled for September 24 and 25 will take place as planned.”

The band shared the same statement on their social media, which went on to include information about full refunds.

The two upcoming shows in Mexico City mark the last in their diaries. However, after wrapping up the US leg of their Skeletour last month, which included a Madison Square Garden show dedicated to the late Ozzy Osbourne, the band ordered fans to “Stay tuned for upcoming dates.”

Ghost have enjoyed record-breaking success in the US. Their recent offering, Skeletá, is the first hard rock album to top the US charts since AC/DC’s effort Power Up, released in November 2020. Additionally, the record has become the biggest-selling rock vinyl since records began in 1991, beating the previous high set by Blink-182’s One More Time… in 2023.

Far Out reviewed Ghost’s latest project, Skeletá, writing, “Some tracks, like ‘Lachryma’, ‘Satanized’, and ‘Umbra’, are magnificent and effortlessly reach Ghost’s soaring standard, with others, like ‘Peacefield’, floating in with notes of memorable charm and undeniable longevity that bring the rest of the record up. However, the all-too-familiar sound of Ghost feels less like a considered attempt at refining a signature style this time and more like someone scrambling to rekindle a flame long lost in the ashes of Impera.”
