FX cancels ‘English Teacher’ after two seasons

FX has announced the cancellation of English Teacher after only two seasons of the TV series.

The series was created by Brian Jordan Alvarez. He starred as Evan Marquez, a high school English teacher in Austin who must navigate several personal and political scandals at work.

Alongside Alvarez, the series included Stephanie Koenig, Sean Patton, Carmen Christopher, Enrico Colantoni, and Jordan Firstman.

It premiered in September 2024 with a week-to-week rollout. A year later, the second season followed, debuting all ten episodes in one go.

The first season was critically acclaimed and received nominations at the Critics’ Choice, Film Independent Spirit Awards, and WGA Awards.

However, despite this initial success, a scandal hit the series only days before the launch of the first season. In 2024, Alvarez was accused of sexual assault by Jon Ebeling.

Ebeling was his former friend and co-star on The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. This was a 2015 web series that Alvarez created and starred in. The allegations were first posted on Instagram, and were later expanded upon in a 2024 New York Magazine article.

Nonetheless, English Teacher was renewed less than two months after the New York Magazine story broke. At the time, a spokesperson for FX said, “We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch.”

They continued, “Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.”

A spokesperson Alvarez vehemently denied the misconduct allegations at the time and said that his “interactions with Jon Ebeling were always entirely consensual”.

Now, FX has not explained why the show was cancelled following the second season. They have no comment at all. Deadline reports that, despite the immediate devoted following, the show was not able to attract and keep a large audience.

English Teacher was executive produced by Alvarez, Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean and Jake Bender and Zach Dunn.
