Fredrik Lindgren, former Unleashed guitarist, dead at 53

Fredrik Lindgren, the former guitarist of the Swedish death metal band Unleashed, has died aged 53.

The sad news of the guitarist’s death was confirmed by his former band. In a post shared on their official Facebook page, Unleaashed wrote, “Warriors!!! Sadly, the news has reached us that Fredrik Lindgren, lead guitar of Unleashed 1989-1995, has passed away.”

They continued, “Fredrik was a huge part of the early history of the band. For this, we are eternally grateful. See you in Valhalla, brother! Johnny & The Boys.” At this stage, no cause of death has been provided.

Unleashed was formed in 1989 in Stockholm, Sweden. Guitarist Fredrik Lindgren was an original member of the group, which vocalist and bassist Johnny Hedlund founded. Providing something new and thrilling to the music world when heavier genres were still on the rise, Unleashed was quickly signed to German record label Century Media Records.

Lindgren contributed to the band’s first four albums; Where No Life Dwells in 1991, Shadows in the Deep in 1992, Across the Open Sea in 1993 and finally Victory in 1995. In those early years, the band were busy and prolific, with Lindgren’s heavy guitar playing being a vital cornerstone of the group’s sonic identity.

However, in 1995, Lindgren left the group due to a growing interest in playing punk music rather than the heavy metal that Unleashed was focused on.

Beyond Unleashed, Lindgren also played guitar for bands like Terra Firma and Harms Way. Lord Chritus, or Christian Lindersson, the frontman of Terra Firma, also commented on the news. “In loving memory of Freddie Eugene 1971-2025. Numbed by the news of your passing, Fredrik my old friend. Hard to put emotions into words. Just hope you have found your peace as you deserve no less.,” Lindersson wrote online in a moving tribute.

He continued, “You will not only be missed by me but many, I know this much. Thank you for being a part of my life and colored it with your friendship and musicianship both embodied in what was Terra Firma. We had some really great times and that will never change. All my love.”
