Len Garry, former of The Quarrymen, dead at 84
Len Garry, a former member of The Quarrymen, has died aged 84.
The Merseybeat star, who played in The Quarrymen alongside Paul McCartney and John Lennon before they went on to form The Beatles, passed away after being diagnosed with pneumonia and previously being admitted to the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
Garry’s daughter, Jane Garry, announced the news on March 2nd in a statement via the Liverpool Echo, which said: “My Dad Len Garry passed away at home in the early hours this morning.”
She continued: “The doctor told us he had hours to live and I said straight away ‘he has to come home.’ Which the doctor allowed. I travelled with dad in the ambulance and got him home.”
The statement went on to note that the musician was surrounded by his family as he passed away, who told him how loved he was and how proud they were of his achievements.
Garry’s daughter ended the tribute to her father by saying: “I love you Dad and I will miss you Dad for the rest of my life. I’m beyond devastated.”
A statement from The Quarrymen’s Instagram also said: “He will be sorely missed by us and Beatle fans across the globe. Our thoughts are with Len’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
The musician joined The Quarrymen while he was still at school, attending the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys.
He subsequently became part of its first consistent line-up, alongside Lennon, McCartney, Colin Hanton, Rod Davis, Pete Shotton and Eric Griffiths.
One of his most memorable moments as part of the band was performing at their first ever show at the iconic Cavern Club in Liverpool, before it eventually evolved into The Beatles with Lennon and McCartney at the helm in the 1960s.
It had previously been revealed that Garry had been suffering from mixed dementia since 2024, with his daughter previously telling the Liverpool Echo: “My dad has always had so much time for the fans.”
