Former Iron Maiden singer Paul Di’Anno’s cause of death revealed

The family of Paul Di’Anno, the former lead singer of Iron Maiden, have revealed the ex-frontman’s cause of death. He passed away in October 2024, which was sad news to the heavy metal community as a whole.

Di’Anno was the singer on Iron Maiden’s first two studio albums. Over the past few years, he had been dealing with a number of different health issues, which became a bit too much, which sadly led to his passing. His former bandmate, Steve Harris, and Bruce Dickinson, the current frontman of Iron Maiden, both paid tribute to the former singer when news of his passing broke. Dickinson also read a eulogy dedicated to Di’Anno during an Iron Maiden concert in Minnesota.

Though Di’Anno suffered a number of health problems, his family have now come out and confirmed what led to his passing. They have announced that it was the result of a heart complication and was instantaneous and “hopefully painless.”

“Dear fans and friends, we have received permission from Paul’s family to bring you the news of Paul’s cause of death after the results of the autopsy have been received,” read a statement on Iron Maiden’s Facebook, “His sisters, Cheryl and Michelle confirmed the following: ‘Basically he had a tear in the sac around the heart and blood has filled inside it from the main aorta artery and that has caused the heart to stop’.” The statement continued, “Paul’s death was instantaneous and hopefully painless. May he rest in peace.”

The statement also referred to a tribute show held to honour Di’Anno on November 7th. It took place in Camden at Underworld, a venue which became synonymous with the singer and that he had sold out multiple times before. A number of bands came together to play in honour of the former Iron Maiden singer, including Electric Gypsy, Hi-On Maiden and Gypsy’s Kiss.

Di’Anno had suffered a number of health issues in recent years, including two knee operations, which meant he had to use a wheelchair. Doctors advised in 2020 that he should stop touring; however, he returned to performing with the band Warhorse while in a wheelchair, and the musical outfit released new music as recently as July 2024.

That same month, Di’Anno was able to meet Bruce Dickinson for the first time, as they were both in Zagreb, Croatia, for work. The two were on good terms despite the fact Bruce Dickinson took Di’Anno’s place when he departed from Iron Maiden.
