Foo Fighters stare mortality in the face on introspective new single, ‘Of All People’

Foo Fighters have continued to tease their new album, Your Favorite Toy, with the introspective new single ‘Of All People’.

The song, which is packed full of riotous energy from the first second, finds Dave Grohl exploring the subject of mortality and questioning why it has evaded one specific person.

He aggressively sings on the first verse, “Of all people, you survived, When no one else could stay alive, You know you should be dead, But you’re alive instead, Of all people, you survived, No matter how fuckin’ hard you tried, You know you should be dead, But you’re alive instead.”

Grohl later sings on the track, “I saw your face today, I swore I’d seen a ghost, A memory that I had prayed I’d finally lost, And you live happily ever after, How can you live happily ever after?”

During a recent interview with The Guardian, Grohl explained how it was written “after bumping into a drug dealer from the 90s that was getting everyone fucked up on heroin. I hadn’t seen them in 30 years, and they’re alive, healthy and sober.”

Grohl had mixed feelings upon seeing this former acquaintance in the wild, which he channelled into the creation of the new single.

He admitted, “I was so happy that this person survived, while at the same time, I was devastated, because of all of the people I know that we’ve lost to exactly that drug.”

The Foo Fighters frontman described the song as “a conversation within myself, feeling so conflicted and divided”, as well as revealing that he brought the lyrics to his therapist and asked whether it was him channelling “survivor’s guilt”.

Foo Fighters have accompanied the release with a live video recorded at their recent intimate concert at St James’ Church for Other Voices in Dingle, Ireland, which holds just 80 people, making it one of the smallest shows that the iconic rock band have ever played.

Your Favorite Toy is set for release on April 24th, which will be followed by a stadium tour across North America and Europe this summer, including two shows at Anfield in Liverpool, the only UK concerts on the run.
