Fleetwood Mac announce new documentary for Apple
Director Frank Marshall is set to create a new authorised documentary exploring the history of Fleetwood Mac for Apple.
Following the death of Christine McVie in 2022, Fleetwood Mac brought their story, which began in the 1960s, to an end. Over the course of several decades, the group went through several different incarnations after initially billing themselves as Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac after their inaugural leader.
Due to his mental health struggles, Green walked away from the group, but they kept the torch alive and eventually recruited Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham in the 1970s, who pushed Fleetwood Mac to incredible heights in a commercial and artistic sense.
Their 1979 album, Rumours, has sold over 40 million records worldwide and helped cement Fleetwood Mac’s status as a musical juggernaut. They followed up on the success of the project with Tusk, Mirage, and Tango in the Night.
Although they continued to tour until McVie’s death, Fleetwood Mac’s final album, Say You Will, arrived in 2003. Now, their story will be told through their own lens in Marshall’s new film which features interviews with Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and the late Christine McVie.
Their tale features incredible highs and devastating lows, which makes it the perfect recipe for a documentary.
“I am fascinated by how this incredible story of enormous musical achievement came about,” Marshall said in a statement (via Deadline).
The director, who has previously helmed documentaries on the likes of The Beach Boys and The Bee Gees, continued: “Fleetwood Mac somehow managed to merge their often chaotic and almost operatic personal lives into their own tale in real time, which then became legend. This will be a film about the music and the people who created it.”
At this stage, the project is yet to receive a release date or a title, but more information is expected to be revealed in due course.
Stevie Nicks rules out Fleetwood Mac reunion
The timing for the documentary announcement is appropriate, as it comes only weeks after Nicks ruled out Fleetwood Mac reuniting in the future. This summer, speculation was rife that they would return due to the band opening social media accounts. However, it now appears this was due to the upcoming documentary rather than a comeback.
Nicks told Rolling Stone: “There is no more Fleetwood Mac now, because when Christine [McVie] died, Fleetwood Mac died. We cannot replace her.”
Furthermore, in the same interview, Nicks also revealed details on Buckingham’s exit from the band in 2018, which will likely be explored in the documentary. The singer claimed she was unhappy with how the guitarist treated people, including Harry Styles, at a benefit concert for MusiCares which led to his departure.
“I think that all just happened the way it should have. It happened one night, not planned, at MusiCares. I didn’t even tell anybody it had happened in my head until the whole ceremony was over,” she remarked.
