Five albums that will cure your winter blues
Our listening habits are certainly ruled by what the weather is like outside, where during the summer, we tend to listen to more upbeat and exciting music, while winter calls for something a bit slower, maybe more melancholic as the desire for hot chocolate under a cosy duvet takes over.
I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but, like me, if you’re not a huge fan of the latter half of the year, giving in to the more stripped-back songs can often feel like defeat.
If you don’t want to conform to matching your music tastes to the season, we at Far Out have gone one step further and curated five albums that will help you fully reject this societal norm, so you choose to play with the pace and not stick to feeling the winter blues.
Wipe away your fears of feeling down as the grey skies encroach your soul, as these are the perfect albums that can get you through any miserable period.
Albums to cure you of your winter blues
Big Thief – ‘Double Infinity’

Big Thief aren’t even songwriters anymore in my opinion, but they’re more musical explorers, travelling around and coming across different sounds that they layer in order to create something beautiful and cinematic. This is on show better than ever on their new record, Double Infinity, which came out earlier this year.
The result is an album that you can truly wrap yourself in, one that exudes warmth and feels like the kind of music that can keep your spirits up during the winter months. Songs like ‘Los Angeles’ sound like warm nights, those that beckon in a brighter near future.
Amyl and the Sniffers – ‘Comfort to Me’

Let’s face it, while Christmas and cosy nights can bring some joy, for the most part, you wake up and it’s dark, and you finish work and it’s dark, making for a frustrating period where life doesn’t quite feel as open and free as it should. During such a phase, it’s important that you let out some anger every now and then, and punk music can serve as the perfect vehicle.
Amyl & The Sniffers are unmatched as a modern punk band, constantly pushing the boundaries of what the genre can sound like, with shredding guitars and exciting vocals, which is a lot of fun to listen to, and their album Comfort To Me is the perfect soundtrack to unleash some of your pent-up winter frustration.
Jimi Hendrix – ‘Axis: Bold as Love’

While unleashing some anger during the winter months can be fun, you could also go in the other direction, one more meditative and zen, and there is no better album to listen to than Jimi Hendrix’s wonderful Axis: Bold as Love.
With songs such as ‘Little Wing’ and ‘Bold as Love’ running throughout the tracklist, Hendrix manages to make one of the sweetest, serene-sounding albums to ever grace the world of rock ‘n’ roll. This album is the equivalent of a warm cup of tea on a cold day, the perfect medicine for any chilly thought that might otherwise be plaguing you.
Durand Jones & The Indications – ‘Flowers’

Sometimes, as the nights get longer and the days grow shorter, all you need is something soothing and uplifting, and one of the best genres that can do this is soul, for the modern soul scene is incredibly sweet-sounding and certainly worth a listen.
One of the best soul records of 2025 is by Durand Jones & The Indications, and it’s called Flowers, where every single song on this record could be a single, so no matter which track you grab, it’ll heighten your mood during what is often a very testing period.
Loaded Honey – ‘Love Made Trees’

Finally, if you’re not a fan of the cold, chances are, you spend a lot of the months thinking wistfully about summer. If that’s the case, then look no further than an album like Love Made Trees, a record which has the sounds of summer embedded into its very existence.
Made as a side project from members of the band Jungle, the album keeps that funk and soul sound at its heart but presents it in a much more stripped-down fashion. It’s a perfect summer record, which during the winter can act as an upbeat reminder that this too shall pass.
