What was the first TV show to reach one billion global streams?
You’d think that counting the number of views or streams a TV series gets would be straightforward today, but it is far from simple. For one thing, the dawn of streaming has turned the usual quantification methods upside down. Most streaming platforms don’t even release their viewership numbers, and analysts are forced to rely on whatever cherry-picked data points the companies choose to provide.
Piracy is another complicating factor. By design, pirated streams are hard to track, even though showrunners would probably like to include them in the total tally of views just to boost their numbers. Then, there are the shows that are broadcast on television and on streaming. How and when do those numbers get tallied? Friends continues to be one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, so its viewership numbers continue to change rapidly.
With all these caveats in mind, you have to weigh a lot of conflicting claims when determining which show was the first to snag a whopping one billion streams. The most frequently cited title to pass this milestone is the last season of Game of Thrones. Remember when it seemed like the entire world was holding its breath to see how all that twisted carnage would play out, only to have everything go from nail-biting to utter deflation with that unforgivably stupid finale? Me too.
The hype around HBO’s adaptation of George R R Martin’s fantasy series built over its first seven series and peaked at the beginning of its eighth and final season. Multiple outlets reported that the first episode of that season garnered one billion global streams, though it’s difficult to find any major publications that made this claim, nor is there a clear way to trace the evidence. Still, its popularity is indisputable. Translated into more than 20 languages, it was broadcast in 207 countries.
A more concrete bit of viewership data is, surprisingly enough, the piracy numbers. According to an anti-piracy analysis firm, season seven alone was illegally downloaded or streamed 1.7 billion times.
What is the most-streamed Netflix show of all time?
When streaming platforms release their own viewership numbers, they should always come with an asterisk. No impartial third party crunches the data or traces the evidence, and there is no way whatsoever to fact-check it. But if we’re going to take Netflix at face value, the numbers are clear.
The streaming platform has its own top ten list, ranking shows by the number of times they have been viewed and the number of hours they have been watched. In terms of the first number, Wednesday takes the cake. It has been streamed more than 252 million times, for a total of 1.7 billion hours watched. The Emmy-winning Addams Family reboot stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams and earned widespread acclaim. Its viewership numbers only account for season one, which landed on the platform in 2022.
Another 2022 series lands in second place. Season four of Stranger Things has had 140 million streams, for a total of 1.8 billion streaming hours. Season three of the series lands in tenth place with 95 million views.
It’s worth singling out the show in third place, too. Adolescence has racked up 138 million views. As the most recent release of any of the shows in the top ten, it has had significantly less time for viewers to watch it than the other entries, making its position in the rankings all the more impressive. The British original series made headlines when it was released in 2025, with critics hailing its single-shot episodes and timely (if harrowing) subject matter.
