First look at Joaquin Phoenix in the new Ari Aster film 'Disappointment Blvd.'

Two icons of contemporary culture collide in Ari Aster’s upcoming project Disappointment Blvd. starring Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, with the first behind the scenes images emerging from the films set in Montreal.

Little is known about Aster’s latest film so far with the only morsel of detail coming from the film’s producer A24 who described the film as “an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time”. Cast alongside Amy Ryan, Zoe Lister-Jones, Parker Posey, Michael Gandolfini, Aster called Disappointment Blvd. a “nightmare comedy,” adding: “All I know is that it’s gonna be four hours long”.

Phoenix looks weathered in the latest behind the scenes image, though the actor is well accustomed to dedicating his mind and body to his roles, willing to lose or gain significant weight in order to embody the character. It was only three years ago that he dropped 52 pounds to play the wiry titular character in Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated Joker. Speaking to E! News, the actor reported: “Once you reach the target weight, everything changes. Like so much of what’s difficult is waking up every day and being obsessed over like 0.3 pounds. Right? And you really develop like a disorder. I mean, it’s wild”.

Despite this, the actor also comments on the benefits of such a transformation, noting: “I felt like I could move my body in ways that I hadn’t been able to before. And I think that really lent itself to some of the physical movement that started to emerge as an important part of the character”.

Ever since the release of the A24 horror Hereditary in 2018, Ari Aster has become a popular name in the landscape of independent cinema, quickly following the film up with Midsommar in 2019. As such he has become a trusted name in horror, capable of genuine visceral terror and dark, twisted moral tales.

Though Disappointment Blvd. is set to be a comedy, we can’t help but feel it will have some disturbing elements.
