
Filipino cinematic icon Nora Aunor dead at 71
Nora Aunor, one of the most celebrated actors in Filipino cinema‘s history, has died at the age of 71.
Aunor’s death was confirmed by her daughter, Lotlot de Leon, on Instagram. de Leon, who is also an actor, shared on April 16th: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Nora Aunor, our beloved mother, celebrated television and movie actress, and a true National Artist of the Philippines,” de Leon captioned a black-and-white photo of the late star.”
Praising the skills of her late mother, Aunor added: “She touched generations with her unmatched talent, grace, and passion for the craft. Her voice, presence, and artistry shaped a legacy that will never fade.”
de Leon continued: “She was a star not only on screen, but in the hearts of many—and stars like hers never stop shining. Her light lives on—forever loved, never forgotten.”
No cause of death has been revealed for Aunor.
Aunor’s most notable roles include Bona and Taklub, which both premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France. She also starred in Himala, The Flor Contemplacion Story, Andrea, Paano Ba ang Maging Isang Ina? and Thy Womb as well as a host of celebrated television series in the Philippines.
Following the announcement of Aunor’s passing, the Philippines’ National Commission for Culture and the Arts has confirmed she will receive a public funeral. They previously recognised her talents and cultural impact when they awarded Aunor with the Order of National Artist by the Office of the President in the field of Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022.
They shared the following about her death: “The ‘Superstar’ has an extensive filmography of more than 170 films. This number is exceeded only by the number of awards and citations she has received from local and international organizations.”
Five children survive the late actor.
