Fcukers – ‘Ö’ album review: essential electro-brilliance

Fcukers - 'Ö'
4.5

Fcukers have risen fast since releasing ‘Mothers/Devil’s Cut’ in 2023, two pounding slices of electronica which highlighted the band as something markedly different. The latter was a thumping take on Beck’s ‘90s alt-rock hit ‘Devil’s Haircut’, a seductive dance floor reimagining with the breathy vocals of Shanny Wise at its core.

The Skinny: Since then, Fcukers slimmed down to a two-piece, released their biggest hit, ‘Bon Bon’, played with Tame Impala, and shared their debut EP, Baggy$$. An infectious buzz has surrounded Wise and Jackson Walker Lewis’ electronic project since their first show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn back in 2023, quickly establishing themselves as a stalwart part of New York’s live scene. Finally, an album is here, Ö, and it’s packed with the kinds of songs you’ll find yourself hitting repeat on.

I’m not being hyperbolic – when they released the single ‘if you wanna party, come over to my house’, I couldn’t stop listening to it over and over, even though the very essence of the song is founded in repetition. The whole album is just as addictive, with catchy vocal hooks from Wise, Walker Lewis’ coursing basslines, and a clear menagerie of influences all bouncing off each other perfectly. Dub and reggae collide with house, while indietronica, R&B, and trip hop are all thrown into the mix without hesitation. And that’s just scratching the surface.

Fcukers never stall, even when their songs consist of simple, repeated lyrics. The album is gleefully hedonistic and party-centric, and their genius isn’t in their lyrics – the words to ‘Butterflies’ are boldly rooted in clichés like “Oh, I think you know you give me butterflies/I’m gonna let it show, I want you every night,” while ‘Play Me’ simply emphasises how they “wanna rock right now” – but in their ability to keep up momentum without stopping.

Every song is short and snappy – they’re all pretty much under three minutes – with each one possessing a unique pop formula that highlights Fcukers as masters of the genre. Whether they’re infusing Daft Punk-esque synths into offbeat love songs like ‘Lucky’, playing with breakbeats and record scratching, or slowing the tempo a little, as demonstrated on ‘TTYGF’ or the unexpectedly cinematic closer ‘Feel the Real’, Fcukers refuse to be predictable. You never know what their next move is going to be, but it’s always going to be good.

Standout Track: ‘if you wanna party, come over to my house’

The Verdict: Everyone went mad over Brat summer a few years ago, but Fcukers are keeping the party going with something that feels even more authentic and cohesive. Ö encourages us to party, to dance in the face of a cruel world, but it also knows when to cool things down a bit, and perhaps take a moment for reflection. Wise’s vocals anchor everything down, which is gloriously tranquil, and even though it’s aggressively American (well, especially to me, a Brit), you can’t imagine a more suited voice to bring these slices of electro-brilliance together.
