Far Out Conspiracies: Why is Jim Carrey linked to the Illuminati?

Conspiracy theories remain big business, and they’re arguably bigger than ever in the social media age, where disinformation has become an accepted part of everyday online life. There are few more notable than the Illuminati, but what does Jim Carrey have to do with it?

The actor rocketed to fame in the mid-1990s after headlining box office sensations Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber within a matter of months, with his signature brand of slapstick physical comedy and malleable mugging turning him into one of the highest-paid stars in Hollywood.

His star has diminished in recent years, but that’s largely because he’s effectively semi-retired. Now into his 60s, the only times he’s appeared on-screen since 2016 came in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and tragicomic TV series Kidding, with Carrey instead dedicating his time to pursuing his hobby of painting. Still, rumours abound that there are many famous people in the Illuminati, and he’s one of them.

For the believers, the cabal is a secret organisation who dictate world events from the shadows, pulling the strings to refit society as they see fit on a whim. Depending on who gets asked, it’s either complete and utter nonsense or the greatest deception that’s ever been pulled on humanity, and there aren’t a lot of people who exist in the vast middle ground between those two points.

The meaning – or lack thereof – behind Illuminati symbols, Illuminati eye, Illuminati pyramid, and more have been endlessly dissected, debated, and discussed by those on either side of the divide, but an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel led to claims that not only did Carrey reveal one of the secret Illuminati hand signs, but he allegedly confessed to his involvement with the group live on air.

“For years now, the presenters of TV shows, and people of the show, have been managed by the government to get you out of the way, to distract you, to make you laugh, make you happy and docile so you do not know what is really happening,” he explained to the host, who wasn’t entirely sure whether to treat it as a joke or not.

Carrey would also give another bizarre interview, which only served to feed into the frenzy that he was hinting at a larger conspiracy. “There is no me. There are just things happening,” he cryptically outlined. “Here’s the thing: It’s not our world. We don’t matter. There’s the good news.” On one hand, many praised him for tearing down the shrouded veil of power surrounding the Illuminati, while others wondered what the hell he was talking about.

Fortunately, The Wrap sought to clarify exactly what he meant, only for Carrey to respond in terms equally – if not more – vague than ever before. “Who’s Jim Carrey? Oh, he doesn’t exist actually,” he began. “There’s just a relative manifestation of consciousness appearing, and someone gave him a name, a religion, a nationality, and he clustered those together into something that’s supposed to be a personality, and it doesn’t actually exist. None of that stuff, if you drill down, is real.”

Is Carrey hinting to the public that there really is an Illuminati who plucked him from semi-obscurity, strapped a rocket to his back, and drove him to the very top of Hollywood? Or is he talking in riddles because he’s known to be a fairly eccentric guy, one who’s faced his fair share of struggles over the years under the glaring spotlight of an unforgiving industry?

Again, that’s entirely open for debate based on personal preference, but there are more than a few folks out there adamant that it’s not a coincidence his career began to slow down and drop off in the aftermath of his initial remarks. He didn’t mention the Illuminati by name beyond Kimmel, of course, but is that what he was hinting at all along, and has he suffered for it?
