‘Fantastic Four’ star Pedro Pascal reveals dissociation struggle

The Fantastic Four: First Steps star Pedro Pascal has opened up about his mental health during the pandemic.

In a new Men’s Health interview alongside Eddington co-star Joaquin Phoenix, Pascal opened up about how the Covid-19 pandemic impacted his emotions. When the interviewer asked how the actor might calm himself down when facing potentially anxiety-inducing situations, he recalled the summer of 2020.

During the first summer after Covid-19 had spread across the globe, Pascal noted that he “started to make an effort to engage more, having previously lost that option in many ways. I can think back on high school, and college, and I was always such a talker with friends. Conversations on the phone, and then I don’t know how many days had gone by where we stopped doing that.”

He added that he enjoyed reaching out when someone would be going through a challenging time, but at a certain point, Pascal stopped doing that, noting, “Instead I’m doomscrolling, or looking for something to watch; looking for different ways to disassociate from the feeling I’m having.”

However, he has since managed to return to a feeling of abundance and community. Pascal added, “And then, when it started to feel so critical, I had to go back to what was always the comfort for me in life, which was engagement in my relationships, my friendships, and conversation and shared experience.”

Pascal hit the headlines recently for his feud with JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series. Rowling recently celebrated a Supreme Court ruling that determined a person’s gender based on their biological sex, thereby leaving no room for trans people to express their gender legally. After Rowling celebrated this win, Pascal branded her “awful, disgusting,” and “a heinous loser.”

Pascal will play Mister Fantastic in the new remake of the classic film. The synopsis for the new Fantastic Four film reads, “Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, the Fantastic Four must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer.”

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is in cinemas from July 25th. Watch the final trailer below.
