Evan Dando’s wife breaks silence after his hospitalisation and reveals ‘Tiny Desk Concert’ won’t be aired: “He was totally out of his mind”
Antonia Teixeira, the wife of Lemonheads singer Evan Dando, has spoken out for the first time since he was hospitalised for mental health issues.
The hospitalisation was confirmed on February 13th, just a day after The Underground Bunker reported that Dando had sent unsolicited explicit videos to a fan.
The fan, who used the pseudonym Dawn, told the publication of the messages, “It’s him sitting in a basement or something, and he’s fully masturbating. You can see his penis, and his face. It’s definitely him. He’s filming it from a weird angle.”
She also alleged to have received another similar video the following day, in which she said Dando was wearing the “same shirt” and in the “same place”.
In response to the report, a representative for Dando revealed that he’d now been checked into a hospital, and explained, “Evan Dando has long struggled with mental health issues dating back to his childhood. He’s been admitted to a local hospital where he’s receiving comprehensive help from experienced doctors and mental health professionals.”
Now, Teixeira, who married Dando in 2024, revealed to Billboard that he has struggled with drinking, as well as prescription drug abuse, throughout their five-year relationship.
Teixeira also shared that they had travelled from São Paulo to New York City for an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on January 20th and also recorded a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR, which will never air.
“That day, he was totally out of his mind,” she said of their appearance on Tiny Desk Concert. “So out of his mind, that the Tiny Desk won’t be aired.”
Upon returning to Brazil, Teixeira, who has threatened to divorce Dando if he doesn’t complete his treatment, said that “everything went to hell” on one specific day after Dando allegedly consumed Adderall, THC and mushrooms before sending videos to women on X, which she later discovered and took him to get treatment.
“You can’t imagine how mad I was when I saw that he was sending messages to girls,” Teixeira said. “I’m very mad, because he betrayed me.”
She also said that Dando “doesn’t remember what he did” and “was in a mental meltdown”, but is “very embarrassed” about his actions.
During an interview with The Guardian last October, Dando stated that he had been clean from heroin for nearly three years. However, Teixeira confirmed that he had continued to struggle with over-the-counter substances.
