‘Euphoria’ star Hunter Schafer arrested at pro-Palestine demonstration in New York
Actor Hunter Schafer, best known for her role on Euphoria, was arrested at a pro-Palestine demonstration in New York on February 26th.
Schafer, who portrays Jules on the hit HBO series, was part of the protest group, Jewish Voice for Peace. They planned to disrupt President Biden’s appearance on The Late Show with Seth Meyers at the Rockefeller Centre, New York and challenge Biden’s stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The actor was pictured wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with ‘Cease-fire now’, and was seen being escorted away from the building by an officer from the New York Police Department. Schafer was one of 50 protestors to be arrested.
The group sat in the lobby of the Rockefeller Centre, with members of Jewish Voice for Peace also holding banners which read ‘Jews to Biden: Stop arming genocide’ and ‘Lasting cease-fire’. Additionally, they chanted, “No more weapons, no more war. Cease-fire is what we’re fighting for,” and “Not in our name”.
A spokesperson from Jewish Voice for Peace told Vulture: “Hunter was arrested at the protest, along with 50 other people. We commend her commitment to Palestinian freedom and to a future of justice for everyone.”
According to their website, Jewish Voice for Peace are the “largest progressive Jewish anti-Zionist organisation in the world. We’re organizing a grassroots, multiracial, cross-class, intergenerational movement of US Jews into solidarity with the Palestinian freedom struggle, guided by a vision of justice, equality, and dignity for all people”.
They claim: “Like generations of Jewish leftists before us, we fight for the liberation of all people. We believe that through organising, we can and will dismantle the institutions and structures that sustain injustice and grow something new, joyful, beautiful, and life-sustaining in their place.”
Schafer is yet to comment on her arrest.
