‘Euphoria’ creator confirms show will not continue: “This feels like the end to me”

Sam Levinson, the creator of the hit HBO drama Euphoria, has confirmed that the show has officially come to an end and will not return, saying, “This feels like the end to me”.

Warning: Spoilers for the final episode of Euphoria ahead.

After three series, the show came to a powerful end with its massive finale on May 31st, in which the main character of Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, died following a drug overdose with fentanyl.

In her final moments, the character imagined getting to reunite with her sisters as well as the character of Fezco, played by Angus Cloud who died in 2023 from a multiple drug overdose

However, with this dramatic and poignant ending to the series, Levinson also revealed in an interview with The New York Times’ Popcast, hours after the finale was aired, that this would also signal the end to Euphoria as a whole.

“In terms of the story we set out to tell, which is a story about addiction and its consequences, this feels like the end to me,” he said.

“It just felt like the honest ending,” Levinson added sombrely. “The honest ending is people like Rue don’t make it.”

On top of this, the show’s themes of drugs and addiction also play into a somewhat politicised narrative that the creator wanted to portray, as he said: “People relapse. They fuck up. They’re not ready to get clean. And they weren’t dying like they are now, with the influx of fentanyl into this country.”

The current series of Euphoria has been an emotionally-charged one for the cast, after Cloud died a year after the broadcast of the second series in 2022, and Eric Dane, who played Cal Jacobs, passed away in February this year.

Despite Dane’s death from ALS, otherwise known as motor neurone disease, he had already filmed his scenes for Euphoria prior to his passing, meaning that he gave one of his final screen performances in the show. A tribute to him, Cloud, and executive producer Kevin Turen was shown before the start of the first episode.
