Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe and more set to star in the new Yorgos Lanthimos film 'Poor Things'

Yorgos Lanthimos is currently assembling a stellar ensemble for his forthcoming film Poor Things, as Jerrod Carmichael becomes the latest name to join Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef and Willem Dafoe.

Poor Things is a radical sounding adaptation of Frankenstein that bears resemblance to the original Mary Shelley novel only in the fact that it will involve reanimating the dead.

Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone will reunite with Lanthimos following on from the trailblazing success of their 2018 collaboration on The Favourite, which was also led by the revolutionary Greek auteur.

Stone will star as Bella Baxter, who is described as “a volatile, oversexed, emancipated woman and a female Frankenstein.” With a central plot that sounds unmistakably Lanthimos-ian, as Bella drowns herself in order to escape her abusive husband but is subsequently resurrected when her brain is replaced by that of the unborn child she was carrying.

This is a plot derived from a novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, with Lanthimos and Tony McNamara, who also wrote the script for The Favourite, working on the adaptation.

Poor Things also has the backing Searchlight who was responsible for the release of The Favourite, but this time they will be joined by Element Pictures and Film4.

As of yet there is no release date for the project, but it would appear production is imminent.
