‘Emilia Perez’ star Karla Sofía Gascón’s offensive social media posts resurface

Amid the Oscars buzz surrounding Emilia Perez, previously offensive comments made by the movie’s star actor, Karla Sofia Gascón, have come to light.

The film had shattered records by becoming the most nominated non-English film in the Academy Awards history, with 13 nominations. Gascón plays the lead role, focusing on one man’s journey from a drug dealer to changing his life after undergoing a sex change. The actor also made Oscar history after being the first transgender woman to receive a ‘Best Leading Actress’ nomination.

Now, recent tweets have resurfaced with Gascón discussing those of the Islamic faith in Spain, saying in December 2020, “I’m Sorry, Is it just my impression or is there more Muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school, there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year, instead of English, we’ll have to teach Arabic.”

This came after other tweets in reference to the Islamic faith, where she explained, “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.”

Aside from her thoughts on religion, Gascón also has made commentary regarding the late George Floyd, saying, “I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys Without rights and consider policemen to be assassins.” Floyd was infamously killed by the police in 2020, sparking a rise in protestors in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

After these tweets were highlighted by journalist Sarah Hagi, Gascón removed them from her X feed and is yet to comment on the resurfacing of the posts.

This also comes soon after director Jacques Audiard issued an apology about the way that Mexico was depicted in the film following many Mexican citizens critiquing the movie. As of yet, both Netflix and Garcon have yet to comment on the resurfaced messages.
