Eddie Murphy confirms plans for Donkey spin-off after ‘Shrek 5’

Eddie Murphy has confirmed that a new spin-off movie in the Shrek franchise will be released after the upcoming Shrek 5, specifically focusing on his character Donkey.

The actor recently spoke with ScreenRant, in which he confirmed that work for the highly anticipated fifth instalment in the Shrek series is underway and revealed that his beloved character will appear in his own movie.

With regards to Shrek 5, Murphy said: “They’re still doing voiceover stuff. We’re still in the booth, and literally, we’re still doing Shrek,” before adding, “We start in September on Donkey, we’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll be three years from now.”

Asked what form the Donkey spin-off will take, the actor continued: “Donkey’s going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie. Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They’ve written this funny story. We’re doing that, starting that in September.”

Specific details such as the title, plot, cast, and release date for the Donkey spin-off have not yet been revealed.

While the fifth instalment of Shrek 5 is set to hit cinemas in February 2026, Murphy is currently also starring in the action-comedy movie The Pickup from Amazon MGM Studios, which also features Pete Davidson and Keke Palmer, and had its premiere in LA on July 27th.

The film follows Murphy and Davidson as a pair of unlikely truck drivers who are ambushed by a gang of criminals, led by Palmer, and subsequently drawn into their empire. It will be released on Amazon Prime on August 6th, 2025.
