Dua Lipa performs ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ with Billie Joe Armstrong in San Francisco

Dua Lipa continued her pattern of bringing out surprise guests on her current tour, this time getting Billie Joe Armstrong to perform ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ in San Francisco.

The pop singer was performing at the city’s Chase Center on October 12th when she told the crowd: “Every night we do a different surprise song by a local artist, and I immediately thought about San Francisco and all the incredible music that has come out of here. I thought about one band in particular… Join me in welcoming the incredible Billie Joe from Green Day!”

Armstrong then rocked onto the stage to play a version of Green Day’s seminal 2004 hit alongside Lipa, marking the star’s second cover of the weekend, after she performed ‘Piece of My Heart’, originally made famous by  Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin.

Lipa has made a regular slot for cover versions and surprise guests during the course of her current Radical Optimism tour, having brought out Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay to perform his classic hit ‘Virtual Insanity’ during her stint at Wembley Stadium in London earlier this summer.

As part of the North American leg of the tour, the singer was also recently joined by Gwen Stefani at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles to perform ‘Don’t Speak’.

She told the audience at the time that Stefani is: “Someone who’s influenced my music, my style, someone who I love as a performer, and someone who constantly keeps redefining herself and music. I just absolutely love her.”

Lipa’s North American stint of the Radical Optimism tour is now drawing to a close, with two more shows at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle on October 15th and 16th, before she heads to South America and Mexico for the duration of the rest of the year.
