Donald Trump says Melania is a “big film star” and claims women are watching her movie “four times”

President Donald Trump continues to lavish praise on his wife and First Lady, Melania Trump, following the release of her controversial documentary, Melania.

The movie, directed by Rush Hour filmmaker Brett Ratner, follows the First Lady in the 20 days leading up to the president’s second presidential inauguration. It has grossed $16 million in theatres worldwide against a reported $40 million production budget, as well as an additional $35 million marketing budget.

Attending a Board of Peace event in Washington, as per Variety, Trump began to discuss his wife, sharing, “She has a very successful movie out right now, like number one. Can you believe this?”

He spun his perspective around upon himself, continuing, “Big movie star, and I always say it’s trouble, because I always say there’s not room in one family for two stars. I told her that we can’t have two stars in one family, so I don’t know what that means. It’s not good.”

Going on to reference Ratner’s documentary, Trump added that the project has “become the biggest-selling documentary in 20 years. The theaters are all packed. Women, especially, they go back, and they see it two or three times, four times.”

The documentary has been at the centre of much discussion in the industry; talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel has called the movie a $75 million “bribe”. He also quipped, “Not since The Terminator has there been this much excitement for a movie about a European cyborg.”

A local cinema in Lake Oswego found itself under fire after Amazon pulled its screening of the Melania documentary after gentle mockery about the film appeared on its marquee, including the line “To defeat your enemy, you must know them. Melania starts Friday.”

Additionally, the South African distributor for Melania cancelled the release of the documentary, citing “recent developments”.
