Donald Glover has reportedly signed a new colossal TV deal with Amazon. The multi-talented artist will leave his current contract with FX, the Disney-owned subsidiary who produce Glover’s highly acclaimed show Atlanta.
Despite Glover signing a deal and switching networks to Amazon, it won’t impact the future of Atlanta as FX has already signed him up to create season three and season four of the hit show. Production for both seasons is set to begin in March and the seasons will be filmed back-to-back as FX hope to air the show as soon as possible as the series last aired in May 2018. However, where the show will end up after season four remains unknown.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Glover’s contract with Amazon is “to include a content channel of sorts that will spotlight Glover’s work and other curated content on Amazon’s Prime Video hub.” The report also states that his brother, Stephen Glover, who co-wrote and produced on Atlanta, penned a deal with Amazon.
The deal that Glover has signed has allegedly been in the works for weeks will also include Glover executive producing other projects for Amazon’s streaming service arm. Hollywood Reporter sources state that one project is already in discussions. The series is potentially called Hive and focuses on a character in the mould of Beyonce and headed-up by writer Janine Nabers. Amazon has declined to comment on this programme and Glover’s deal to THR.
Glover recently announced that he and Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge would be creating, starring and exec producing an updated version of Mr and Mrs Smith for Amazon arriving in 2022.
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, announced in a statement: “Talk about the dream team! Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world.”
Salke added, “It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team. Mr and Mrs Smith is an iconic property, and we can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe and Francesca make it their own.”
