Dolly Parton show ‘Dolly: A True Original Musical’ set for Broadway run

The Dolly Parton show, Dolly: A True Original Musical, has announced its transfer to Broadway later this year.

The Queen of Country has decided not to take her life story in front of the cameras, like many other classic artists, but instead set it to the stage, following the suit of other musicals involving musicians such as Carole King and Tina Turner.

After a global casting call to find the right actors to play Parton through the ages, Dolly: A True Original Musical received its global premiere in her beloved Nashville earlier this year, before announcing its transfer to New York.

In a video posted to Instagram on July 7th revealing the news, the country icon said: “Now, this isn’t a story about sparkle and shine on the outside. It’s about what I really come from – what I’ve lived, what I’ve lost, what I’ve loved, and how I found my way and told it in my own words, and through the music that’s been part of me every step of the journey.”

Parton subsequently revealed that the soundtrack for the musical is made up of a combination of some of her classic hits, as well as a selection of new songs she has written specifically for the show.

To this end, she added in a statement, “My whole life has been a musical. A grand ole opera really, and I can’t wait to present it to you on Broadway. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I’ve enjoyed livin’ it.”

Dolly: A True Original Musical is set to find its Broadway home at the St James Theater, which is currently playing the show Titanique, set to close in September.

This will subsequently make way for Parton to parade into the theatre, with preview performances set to begin on December 7th and an official opening night slated for January 19th, 2027, which happens to be the singer’s 81st birthday. The show is currently billed to run until November 21st, 2027.

Tickets for Dolly: A True Original Musical will be first available for presale through the show’s website on July 8th at 10am local time. The general sale will then begin on July 10th at 10am local time. Casting for the musical will be revealed at a later date.
