Folk singer Dolly Mavies speaks out after walking out of concert due to reports of JD Vance being in attendance
English folk singer Dolly Mavies has spoken out for the first time since pulling out of a concert after hearing JD Vance would be in attendance.
In August, the US Vice-President holidayed in the Cotswolds in England. His decision to bring his family to the rural area brought worldwide attention to the Oxfordshire countryside, as well as road closures and a 20-vehicle security motorcade, much to the annoyance of locals.
While Vance was in the Cotswolds, Mavies was set to perform a concert at a venue in Daylesford, but cancelled the show after murmurings broke out that he was set to be in the crowd.
In an initial Instagram post, she explained her decision: “So not being fans of his, we decided that wasn’t for us and we packed up our stuff and left.” Mavies also wrote, “Because morals are more important than money.”
Notably, Vance was not in attendance at the concert, and according to the BBC, he did not plan to go to the show. However, he was in Daylesford earlier that day to visit the local farm shop, which is where Mavies was due to perform.
Now, in a new interview with the BBC, Mavies said she became “suspicious” because there was a “lot of security around, which there isn’t normally, and then a huge convoy of police motorbikes and very big cars”.
The singer, whose real name is Molly Davies, said she has received “wonderful comments and support from people all across the world” since sharing her experience on Instagram.
She added, “Obviously there’s an overwhelming sense of support in America… I think for a lot of American people there’s a lot of uncertainty, and a lot of people are scared, and it was amazing to feel like they’d been heard.”
The Oxfordshire singer also defended her actions amid criticism she has faced from fans of the politician, adding, “We could’ve done something much more extravagant… leaving is the most peaceful way of protest in some way.”
