Doechii condemns ongoing Los Angeles ICE raids: “Ruthless attacks”
Doechii has condemned the ongoing ICE raids in Los Angeles during her acceptance speech at the BET Awards, branding them “ruthless attacks.”
The rapper was accepting her award for ‘Best Female Hip-Hop Artist’ at the ceremony on June 9th when she acknowledged the events that had taken place in the host city in the past days.
She said, “There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order,” referencing President Donald Trump’s order to send the National Guard into protests about migrant deportations, without the permission of Governor Gavin Newsom.
Doechii continued in her speech: “Trump is using military forces to stop a protest, and I want y’all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us. What type of government is that?”
Noting how her platform provides her with a voice to speak out on the issue, the rapper implored: “People are being swept up and torn from their families, and I feel it’s my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people: For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people in Gaza.”
“We all deserve to live in hope and not in fear,” she concluded, “and I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters, against hate and we protest against it.”
Doechii’s dominance is set to continue in the coming weeks. In addition to her award, she is also set to headline the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury on June 28th.
Elsewhere at the BET Awards, leading nominee Kendrick Lamar came away with four awards, most notably ‘Album of the Year’ for GNX.
