Disney settles Elon Musk backed lawsuit with Gina Carano

Disney has finally resolved a legal dispute with Gina Carano, after she was fired from Star Wars’ The Mandalorian in 2021 due to her social media posts.

The actor was fired in early 2021 after a viral scandal. She shared a post on her Instagram that likened being a Republican in 2021 to a similar battle that Jewish people faced during the Holocaust. The actor deleted the post, but screenshots of the offensive comparison had already been taken.

“Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?” the mixed-martial-arts fighter wrote in defence of her viewpoint.

At this time, Lucasfilm branded the post “abhorrent and unacceptable” for “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities”. She had already faced backlash from fans after supporting Donald Trump’s false claim that his 2020 loss to Joe Biden was a result of voter fraud.

In 2024, Carano hit back. She wrote on X, “The truth is I was being hunted down from everything I posted to every post I liked because I was not in line with the acceptable narrative of the time.” She announced then that she had sued Disney for wrongful termination with backing from Elon Musk.

In her lawsuit, Carano alleged Disney had required her to meet with an LGBTQ+ rights group, which she refused. After she refused to meet with a group of LGBTQ+ employees of Disney, she was fired, the suit shared. Because of this, her case accused Disney and Lucasfilm of “bullying, discriminatory, and retaliatory actions”.

On August 7th, Carano took to X again to announce that she had reached an agreement that she believes “is the best outcome for all parties involved.”

Concurrently, the Lucasfilm spokesperson said Carano “was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect.”

The spokesperson also added that they would be happy to work with the Trump supporter again: “With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms Carano in the near future.”
