Depeche Mode announce new concert film, ‘M’

Depeche Mode have shared details of their new live concert movie, M, which was captured on their Memento Mori tour.

M has been described as an “expressive and dynamic cinematic” experience rather than a traditional concert film. Similarly to everything else that Depeche Mode have created over the course of their career, they have approached M from a unique angle.

The film features interstitials and archival footage from the band’s Mexico City shows with award-winning director Fernando Frias on filmmaking duties.

A press release for M explains: “The feature-length film, conceptualized and directed by award-winning filmmaker Fernando Frias, takes audiences on a profound musical journey, using nearly 200,000 Mexican fans’ fervent connection with the band as a window into the band’s timeless global influence, and a powerful tribute to the unbreakable connection between music, tradition and the human spirit.”

Frias previously won Mexico’s Airel Academy Awards with I’m No Longer Here, which won in ten different categories, including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Direction’. In 2021, Mexico also selected the movie for the ‘Best International Feature’ category at the Academy Awards.

There is no specific release date attached to M but it has been confirmed to arrive in cinemas later this year.

Memento Mori was released in 2023, which led to a world tour consisting of 112 dates that saw them perform in front of three million fans across the globe.

In a four-star review, Far Out wrote of the album: “The gatekeepers of gothic synth haven’t reinvented the wheel in Memento Mori, but they’ve given nuanced and considered treatment to their distinctive sound. In this chapter, Depeche Mode have introduced new depth to their morbid allusions, exhuming light from darkness and finding comfort in reality. The album is a triumphant return to the studio, undoubtedly boasting some of their finest work since 1993’s Songs of Faith and Devotion.”
