Denzel Washington discusses his future career: “Few films left for me to make that I’m interested in”

What more can you ask for from an actor other than complete commitment to their roles and unwavering authenticity? This is what Denzel Washington provides every time he’s on the screen, and it’s why so many people continue to connect with his performances, regardless of his role.

When you have a look at Washington’s back catalogue of movies, it’s a clear reflection of a man who has dominated his craft and, as a result, is left completely unburdened by expectation. He has enough self-confidence and range to tackle any role he takes on with complete ease. It’s always exciting to see him dive into another character, which makes it incredibly sad that the veteran actor may be hinting at retiring.

The next time fans are going to be able to see Washington perform will be in the upcoming highly anticipated Gladiator 2. Directed by Ridley Scott, Washington will be appearing alongside a number of big names, including Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn. The person he was most excited about working with, however, was Ridley Scott, and he has confirmed it’s his eagerness to work with filmmakers which has led to him not starring in as many pictures as of late.

“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in,” said Washington, “And I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley.”

Scott was equally inspired by Washington, who has described the character he plays in the upcoming Gladiator 2 as “pretty fucking cruel”. He also said he was tremendously excited about people getting to see the new movie, stating that it is “As good as the first one… I didn’t say better. It’s as good.”

Washington has yet to formally discuss retirement, so there may be a number of different movies we see him in before he officially decides to call it a day; however, his overall number of performances will likely get smaller and smaller as he becomes more selective about the roles he chooses. If anyone has earned the right to be picky about their roles, it’s Washington. He has gifted the public with a number of exciting characters and has been nominated for ten Oscars, taking home two of them.

What we might see Washington star in the future remains up in the air, but fans can get a taste of his “cruel” portrayal in the new Gladiator 2 film when it comes out on November 15th.
