Denzel Washington says he’s become “tired of movies”

Hollywood icon Denzel Washington has admitted that he no longer watches movies.

Washington’s latest project, Highest 2 Lowest, reunites him with frequent collaborator Spike Lee, which is set to arrive on Apple TV+ on September 5th, 2025.

However, during the promotional tour for the film, Washington made the stark revelation about his lack of interest in cinema. He told GQ: “I don’t watch movies, man. I really don’t. I’m just being honest with you.”

Washington continued, “I don’t watch movies. I don’t go to the movies. I don’t watch movies. I’m tired of movies. Yeah.”

Last year, Washington appeared to suggest that he plans to retire from cinema after fulfilling his upcoming obligations, and said, “There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in. And I have to be inspired by the filmmaker.”

Washington then clarified his comments, revealing to Buzz Feed, “I’m more interested in getting behind the camera, so that’s about five years out. It’s very difficult. I may have used the word ‘retire’… but I look at life in three sections – you learn, you earn and you return. I’m in the return part of life.”

Washington, a double Oscar winner, also said on the Jake’s Takes podcast earlier this month that he doesn’t bestow any value upon awards, sharing, “I don’t do it for Oscars. I don’t care about that kind of stuff. I’ve been at this a long time, and there’s time when I won and shouldn’t have won and then didn’t win and should’ve won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward.”

Earlier this year, Washington returned to Broadway to star in Othello, and is also set to star in Black Panther 3, which Ryan Coogler is believed to be currently writing.
