Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan announces solo spoken-word UK tour

Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan has confirmed details of an extensive spoken word UK tour for next April and May.

The 80-year-old will take on an impressive 24-location tour, which will open on April 28th at Bournemouth’s Pavilion, before heading to Ipswich’s Corn Exchange and London’s Union Chapel.

Throughout May, Gillan will make appearances in Cardiff, Tunbridge Wells, Glasgow, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Manchester, Leicester, Coventry, Birmingham, Nottingham, Hayes, Basingstoke, Bath, Guildford, Folkestone, Aylesbury, Bristol, Sheffield, and Liverpool before concluding at London Cadogan Hall on May 29th.

As per official details of the solo tour, Gollan will conjure up stories from his childhood in Hounslow to the global rise of Deep Purple to reflect on “the experiences, music and outlook on life that shaped one of rock’s most influential careers. The tour offers a rare chance to hear directly from a true music icon.”

Gillan added of the affair, “I am quivering with anticipation at the prospect of embarking on my first ever public speaking engagements… After 65 years on the road, there will be stories about some of the fascinating and sometimes magical events and people that I’ve encountered along the trail. It’s going to be a blast!”

Last November, Gillan revealed that he is losing his vision: ” I’ve only got 30 per cent vision,” he confessed, before adding, “That won’t get better. It makes life mysterious. The hardest thing is working on my laptop. I can’t see anything on the screen unless I use my peripheral vision – I pick up a line by looking at it sideways. But you find a way. You adapt.”

Despite this, Deep Purple have plenty of forthcoming headline shows and festival appearances this summer, stretching all the way to a final date in Mexico City on December 19th.
