The boy wonder continues to write with honesty and a cutting edge whilst remaining authentic, it’s a trick which is seeing Declan McKenna’s name be pencilled in for future awards and ‘ones to watch’ lists. New track ‘Isombard’ reflects this perfectly.
“The idea of Isombard is basically about this right wing Fox News-type TV presenter trying to justify things like police brutality and xenophobia,” says McKenna, “and using cases for backwards political gains, but completely fumbling over his words and not really knowing what he’s talking about.
“It’s also maybe me trying to rewrite “next to of course god america i” by E. E. Cummings, but as a pop song.”
And it is this kind of pop reflection which makes McKenna a must see artist and a must-collect record maker. He channels pop sounds through a socially astute river of quick wit and pounding rhythm. It’s a recipe for success.
