David Lynch’s cause of death revealed

David Lynch’s cause of death has been revealed. The iconic and surreal filmmaker passed away almost a month ago at the age of 78.

The writer and director, who was adored by critics and fans and was responsible for cinematic gems such as Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive, died on January 16th, 2025. In 2020, he was diagnosed with emphysema; however, it appears that his cause of death was cardiac arrest.

On Friday, January 7th, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health published their report, which details the cause of death for the director. They confirmed that he passed away due to cardiac arrest resulting from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The report also states that dehydration was a significant contributing factor towards his death.

Lynch’s family took to social media to announce his sad passing when it occurred. A post on Facebook read, “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not the hole’.”

His decline in health was initially prompted in the days leading up to his death as he was evacuated from his home amid the Los Angeles wildfires.

Lynch had grown health conscious since the pandemic. In a previous interview with Sight & Sound magazine, he had confirmed that after being diagnosed with emphysema in 2020, he was hesitant to go out at risk of catching covid.

“I’ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long and so I’m homebound whether I like it or not,” he said, “It would be very bad for me to get sick, even with a cold.” Lynch went on to admit that he struggled to go for a short walk without feeling as though he was “Out of oxygen.”

His death prompted responses from his former colleagues and film lovers, as they paid homage to the legacy he leaves behind as a cinematic visionary.
