David Lynch requested a big bag of Cheetos for ‘The Fabelmans’
David Lynch has confessed to his one requirement during the creation of The Fabelmans: having a big bag of Cheetos in his dressing room.
During a new interview, Lynch explained his fixation with the crunchy puff corn snack, stating that he requested a big bag on set to accommodate his obsession with them. “I love them,” he told Empire. “And any chance I can, I get them. But I know that they’re not exactly health food. So when I do leave the house and I get a chance to… But I don’t get them that often, honestly.”
He added: “If I do get them, I want a big bag. Because once you start… you need to have a lot before you could slow down and actually stop. Otherwise, with a small bag, then you’d be prowling for days to find more […] It’s incredible flavour.”
Lynch first admitted his appreciation for Cheetos earlier this year, mentioning that this was his only specific requirement on set. He also delved into why he doubted the film’s script when he began working on the first iteration in 1999.
He explained: “My big fear is that my mom and dad won’t like it and will think it’s an insult and won’t share my loving yet critical point of view about what it was like to grow up with them.”
In 2002, he had similar feelings towards the project: “It’s so close to my life and so close to my family – I prefer to make films that are more analogous. But a literal story about my family will take a lot of courage. I still think I make personal movies even if they do look like big commercial popcorn films.”
Spielberg ultimately chose to proceed with the project, revealing that his late parents had been persistently urging him to create a film based on their lives before their passing in 2017 and 2020. Since its release in November, the film has earned over $18 million.
