David Fincher’s ‘Mindhunter’ could return as two movies
Despite ending half a decade ago, David Fincher‘s Netflix crime series Mindhunter could be making a comeback.
Speaking with CBR, series star Holt McCallany provided fans with an unexpected dose of hope, suggesting the show may return to screens in a very different form. “Look,” he began, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies.”
However, he quickly added, “But I think it’s just a chance. I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.” Even McCallany tried his hand at script-writing: “I recently wrote a script that he was kind enough to give me notes on.”
Fincher had previously announced that the show’s cancellation after the second season was due to economic issues. “For the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show. We talked about ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs,” the director commented before the official cancellation.
McCallaney stars alongside Jonathan Groff, who plays Holden Ford, and Anna Torv, who plays Wendy Carr. The show follows the FBI’s profiling and serial killer interviewing processes, beginning from the late 1970s.
Expanding on the possibility of the comeback films, McCallany took the opportunity to express his gratitude for the beloved series. “I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all,” he said.
Ultimately, the show’s return is not up to him, nor his fellow actors. He said, “I would love it if we were to return. I think, like I said, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had the meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align.”
