David Byrne announces his upcoming wedding with specially curated new playlist

David Byrne has announced he is getting married later this week and shared the playlist he has specially curated for the occasion with fans.

In a recent interview ahead of the release of his new album, Who is the Sky?, on September 5th, Byrne revealed he was engaged to his long-term partner Mala Gaonkar. Now, he’s confirmed it is happening this week.

Taking to Instagram, Byrne announced, “I’m getting married this week and made an almost entirely instrumental playlist while our guests eat an amazing and spicy dinner. My sense is that words and lyrics can be distracting – the ear goes to them, especially if it’s a song one know.”

The former Talking Heads frontman continued, “So, I opted for buoyant instrumentals that will create a hopeful and joyous atmosphere… and that folks can also ignore at the same time.”

In total, the Apple Music playlist comprises of 42 songs, which are mostly instrumental cuts, such as Mexican Institute of Sound’s ‘Canales’, the Meridian Brothers’ ‘En El Caribe Estoy Triste’, and Son Rompe Pera’s ‘Luz de Luna’.

Other notable tracks include ‘Corpus Christi Carol’ by Jeff Beck, an instrumental version of ‘Wow’ by Post Malone, ‘Watermelon Man’ by Herbie Hancock, and ‘Tiers Monde’ by Francis Bebey.

Meanwhile, Byrne’s new record, which also arrives this week, is produced by Kid Harpoon, best known for his Grammy-winning work with Harry Styles, and features a series of very special guests, including St Vincent and Hayley Williams.

Reflecting on the album, Byrne previously said: “At my age, at least for me, there’s a ‘don’t give a shit about what people think’ attitude that kicks in. I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I’m doing.”

Following his wedding, Byrne will be heading on tour, which is due to kick off in Providence at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium on September 14th before travelling across North America. In January, Byrne will bring the tour to Australia and New Zealand before travelling to the UK and Europe in February for a six-week run. In the UK, he will play Cardiff, Manchester, Glasgow and three shows at London’s Eventim Apollo.

His playlist is available to listen to here.
