Listen back to David Bowie’s amazing isolated vocal on his classic track ‘Modern Love’

The inimitable David Bowie is often heralded as one of the true artists in rock and roll. But while his costume and his vision is often highly charted among the best and brightest of the scene, his vocal is too often overlooked.

So we thought we would take it upon ourselves to bring you a taste of that vocal and how it shaped not only this song but Bowie’s career, almost without us knowing it. The best way to do that is to isolate his vocal on one of his most notable tracks, ‘Modern Love’, the 1983 track from Let’s Dance.

‘Modern Love’ was the 2nd song that Bowie recorded for the album, after its title track ‘Let’s Dance’, recorded in the first few weeks of January 1983. By the time ‘Modern Love’ was issued as a single, one of Bowie’s most notable tours, the Serious Moonlight Tour was underway. The video for the song used live footage of Bowie and his band performing the song, Philadelphia on 20th July 1983.

‘Modern Love’ also has a pretty impressive backline behind one of the most notable artists in rock and roll. Supporting Bowie was Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar, with Nile Rodgers on production. Yet Bowie still manages to own the entirety of the song with just his momentous vocals.

The track is known as one of Bowie’s more upbeat numbers, but when the vocal track is isolated it takes on a whole new shape. On the isolated vocal Bowie’s lyrics take on a more post-modern style, moving towards the poetry of the decade as Bowie flip flops around the ideal of love.

Complete with eerie backing vocals, this take of David Bowie’s isolated vocal on ‘Modern Love’ is yet another testament to his incredible talent, a talent which is often overlooked.

I know when to go out
And when to stay in
Get things done I catch a paper boy
But things don’t really change
I’m standing in the wind
But I never wave bye-bye

But I try, I try

There’s no sign of life
It’s just the power to charm
I’m lying in the rain
But I never wave bye-bye

But I try, I try

Never gonna fall for (modern love)
Walks beside me (modern love)
Walks on by (modern love)
Gets me to the church on time (church on time)
Terrifies me (church on time)
Makes me party (church on time)
Puts my trust in god and man (God and man)
No confessions (God and man)
No religion (God and man)
Don’t believe in modern love

It’s not really work
It’s just the power to charm
I’m still standing in the wind
But I never wave bye-bye

But I try, I try

Never gonna fall for (modern love)
Walks beside me (modern love)
Walks on by (modern love)
Gets me to the church on time (church on time)
Terrifies me (church on time)
Makes me party (church on time)
Puts my trust in god and man (God and man)
No confessions (God and man)
No religion (God and man)
Don’t believe in modern love
