David Bowie immortalised as Mattel announce Barbie as Bowie
50 years after the release of his first big hit ‘Space Oddity’, David Bowie has been immortalised as a gender-bending Barbie Doll. The release from Mattel is officially called Barbie as Bowie but it’s hard not to just see Ziggy Stardust.
The now highly collectable doll is designed to replicate the famous Bowie alter ego, and fire-haired rock star: Ziggy Stardust and is pretty damn flawless in doing it. The costume is a homage to the legendary sun make up look.
That’s probably because this iteration of the iconic doll has been made in collaboration with the 2019 David Bowie Archive. At £40 ($50) a pop, they’re not the cheapest but this is a collector’s dream, so you may have to be quick if you want one of these moonage daydreams.

The news comes on the 50th anniversary of the first release of ‘Space Oddity’, Bowie’s first notable release. It was a song that launched Bowie into popular culture and ignited a fire in David to fulfil his dreams as a starman.
Watch below David Bowie’s first television performance of that now iconic track is another peek at the beginnings of what would be a legendary career. A career that won’t have peaked with this Barbie Doll, but it remains another pop culture summit in Bowie’s mountain range.
